Should Bike Helmet Laws Be Dumped?

This is an interesting article, that briefly brings up the differing opinions about helmet laws for cyclists. This is definitely an argument to watch.

Personally, I don’t really think laws are needed (although for kids it might be worthwhile). However, if a person were to ride a bike without a helmet … they must be NUTS. Because there is a great probability that your head MIGHT come in contact with something hard at some point or another.

Check out my bike crash experience from 8 months ago. It I wasn’t wearing a helmet, that would have been my head sporting those scrape marks. Not cool! And that was just a simple, 15-minute, 5 mile bike commute morning.

Scrap bike helmet law

A public health expert has called for laws making the wearing of bike helmets compulsory to be repealed, to encourage more people to ride bikes.

Associate Professor Chris Rissel, from Sydney University’s School of Public Health, says the greatest drop in head injuries was in the 80s – before the laws were introduced – because of road safety campaigns and speed controls.

He says the number of head injuries has remained steady since then, creating a case to overturn the helmet law.

Bicycle New South Wales vice-president Richard Birdsey says road safety, not helmet laws, is the biggest turn-off for potential cyclists.
